Carol Onufro elected 105th WPGA President

JOHNSTOWN — Carol Onufro was elected the 105th President of the Board of Directors of the Western Pennsylvania Golf Association Thursday at Sunnehanna Country Club in Johnstown, Pennsylvania.

Onufro, a native of Johnstown and member at Sunnehanna, recently served as the Vice President of the WPGA’s Board of Directors for the last year during Ken Flisek’s term as President.

“We are delighted to welcome Carol Onufro to the role of President of the WPGA Board of Directors,” said Terry Teasdale, Executive Director. “Carol’s commitment to bettering the game of golf in Western Pennsylvania, as well as her goals to make golf more accessible and inclusive will undoubtedly make for a successful term over the next year."

Smith's wild finish leads to West Penn Senior Am title

PRESTO — The final stroke of the 93rd Western Pennsylvania Golf Association Senior Amateur Championship was a perfect representation of how the final round unfolded Tuesday.

William Smith circled around a par putt on the ninth hole, claiming victory to his first-ever WPGA major title at The Club at Nevillewood.

“The history that’s gone on in West Penn, and the names on some of these trophies, it’s something,” said Smith, a member at Allegheny Country Club.

Smith shot a 2-over score of 146 to win the competition over a pair of rainy days. But the victory certainly had its uncertain moments, right up until the final putt.

Michael Capotis knows about grass.

Growing it, tending to it, cutting it, and playing golf on it.

He oversees the first three of those as owner of Perf-a-Lawn, a family-owned business that’s been in operation since 1980, based in Erie.

“I’m a lawn guy,” he said with a laugh.

Over the last two days at The Club at Nevillewood, Capotis was the best golfer in the Super-Senior Amateur competition in conjunction with the Senior Amateur event.

Hall of Fame

Western Pennsylvania has a lengthy, rich and storied history.


The Western Pennsylvania Golf Association celebrated its centennial in 1998. Part of this celebration was to recognize area golfers and contributors who had an impact on our history. The Western Pennsylvania Golf Hall of Fame was established in 2013 to celebrate this history. The inaugural class consisted of William C. Fownes, Jr., Jock Hutchison, Arnold Palmer, Carol Semple Thompson, and Lew Worsham.

Scholarship Fund

Founded in 1941, nearly 700 students have received a scholarship.


The WPGA Scholarship Fund was founded in 1941 and awarded two scholarships to the University of Pittsburgh and another to Duquesne University. The first Caddie Welfare Committee surfaced in 1927 and addressed issues to benefit of caddies at the various Member Clubs of the Association. Fourteen years later the movement secured enough money to sponsor its first scholars.
